Many people haven't heard of YAWN (at least, I don't think they have), but I reviewed one of their albums a couple of years ago. Strangely what I loved about that album is almost the complete opposite of what I love about this Dam Gila EP. That YAWN was strange. It was experimental. It was complex. It was hard to listen to, but I loved it anyway. I recommended it to a couple of people and some of those people hated it, and although I disagreed, I completely understood their stance. That YAWN album was not meant for everyone and I'd think the band would be the first to agree with that sentiment.
So why am I brining up YAWN in a Dam Gila review?
Well, because Adam Gil is the front man of YAWN. And Adam Gil is also Dam Gila. Got it?
And I'm completely flabberstonished on how Adam was able to stylistically perform a 180 goofy-footed. Who the fuck is this guy? The songs on this Dam Gilla are as approachable as the girl with thick rimmed glasses hanging out by the punch bowl by herself at Prom. What went from dark and creepy went to bright and fun. What went from hard-listening to went to easy-listening.
As a matter of fact, I'll venture to say that everybody (everybody=everybody who has a refined taste in music) will like this EP titled Face The Sun. Seriously, the assholes who won't like Dam Gila are the same assholes who refuse to order a pizza without adding olives. FORGET THAT EVERYBODY ELSE IN THE PARTY WILL HAVE TO PICK THOSE OLIVES OFF WITH THEIR FINGERS.
Fuck those olive-loving assholes. Black or green - I don't care - I'm non denominational in my hate for those shitty salty balls.
Sorry, I just got a little heated. Where was I?
Oh yeah, the songs on this EP are just great fucking songs with great fucking writing. They are a little poppy, a little psychedelic, and a little glam. Dam Gila really reminds me of what Diane Coffee is doing but a little less show-tuney and a little more tie-dyed. The EP just has a nice David Bowie flavor to it, whether it's that 'Let's Dance guitar' on the track 'Slow Burn' or the uplifting choruses throughout.
The 7 tracks on Face The Sun are hooky as fuck and the EP will quickly fly by your ears leaving you thirsty for more. Give me more Adam. GIMMIE SOME MORE.
