35 Songs You Need From 2013

Staff | December 18, 2013

At SYFFAL we pride ourselves on not being dick riders or mouth pieces for the increasingly annoying boutique Public Relations/indie music industry obsessed with click bait, quick buzz and constantly remaining in the face of the public.

We get that attention spans are shorter these days, dollars spent are less than they used to be, and the pie needs to be split 5000 different ways by an ever growing collective of sub-talents that rush to Fuck the next trend in an attempt to stay relevant. Only we don’t give a Fuck about that shit.

This isn’t to say we are rebels, because we most certainly are not. We are just secure enough to like what the Fuck we like and if that happens to come from some shitbag with 14 twitter followers making his music in the Salt Lake City suburbs with no attention grabbing back story to exploit, but some sick chops and songs that make you want to cry until you throw up, well so fucking be it.

If you want to see who can suck off coke addled rappers who marry reality TV stars or former marketing machines that nobody but corporate backers seem to care about go visit the other sites. If you want some assholes like you, talking about some shit that moves them beyond the marketing plan of the influx of faux controversy designed to sell records, well enjoy this.

Abe Abraham - Feel The Same: This is a song that makes me weepy. It's just full of feelz. It's all up in my emotions bro. Deal with it. – Johnny

Atmosphere - Millennium Dodo 1 & 2: Slug & Ant's interconnected sojourn is one of 2013's intangibles I thoroughly enjoy trying to put my finger on. - Emp

Bell X1 - Careful What You Wish For: I, too, am a sucker for songs that make me cry AND erectify the pole muscle. Bell X1 are my sensitive side this year. – Joel

Bibio - A tout a l'heure: I spin in circles with my mouth agape in a field filled with other people with their mouths agape. This is like life with pillows duct taped to your every bone bro. – Joel

The Blank Tapes - Coast to Coast: My favorite time machine rock band of the year. The van is a rockin. – Brando

Caitlin Rose - I Was Cruel: My love of all things Ms. Rose is well-documented. This song is no sexception. - Brando

Caveman - In the City: With the very first listen I knew this song was something special. 100 plays later it still feels that way. - Del

Daniel J. W!shington - Stealing: There probably wasn't another song this year that made my voice crack more at its pure unadulterated beauty than Stealing. It feels like sitting on a beach watching the/your world end. – Tim

Ducktails - Under Cover: This sax has a smoothening effect. And I'm all about the smoov because that's how I operate, bro. This is the track to play while you do the patented 'stretch your arms in the air > bring one arm down around your lady's back neck > and cop a feel.' – Tom

Escondido - Black Roses: You know what gets me every time? Dreamy lady-vocals and and steel pedal guitar. This song reminds me of Mazzy Star's 'Fade Into You.' – Tom

Har Mar Superstar - Lady You Shot Me: I love these throw back R&B tunes with all dat soul. From the very first verse in this song your stomach is in knots and you most likely have fallen to your knees. "LADY YOU SHOT ME! On top of all the tears you've brought me." That bitch. - Tom

In The Whale - Girlfriend: In The Whale just kills shit and this song is super catchy. I find myself singing to strange girls at bars. It doesn't work. Still a good song though. – Johnny

J Roddy Walston and the Business - Heavy Bells: This is rock and roll, bro. I feel so sorry for what the vocals do J. Roddy's throat in this track, but oh how I love them and want them to reprimand me for doing something juvenile and irresponsible, like flushing a cherry bomb down Timmy's terlet. - Tom

Janelle Monae - Dance Apocalyptic: This song makes me want to take my pants off and swing them over my head while running around the house screaming. I do this every time this song is played. This should have been a huge hit single. Don't sleep on this joint. – Johnny

Kevin Gates - IHOP: A stunning near-acapella novella narrated by a leading man teeming with tiger blood and alacrity. - Emp

Lorde - Royals: This song is proof that you should pay the Fuck attention to what we're doing at SYFFAL. I saw this joint come across and a review go up and it wasn't until months later that this song was on EVERY radio station in town. We're dropping gems on you like this every week. You've been warned. – Johnny

Mikal Cronin - Weight: I fucking love the chord progressions in this song; it's jammed packed with a plethora of chords that all hit at the perfect time....especially the one at 2.30. It's these magical pants dampening moments that enable my music obsessions. – Tom

Milo - Ecclesiastes: Some people I know hate Milo just as much as I love him, which is a lot. - Brando

Milo - I Almost Cut My Hair (For Crosby): This is the song that made me feel that rap could be beautiful again. - Tim

Moderat - Bad Kingdom: I thought this was block rockin' beats for about two weeks, and then when I discovered it wasn't, I wasn't angry cause I was still cock blockin' block rockin' beats. – Joel

Odd Nosdam - Trish: In a word: beautiful; no other piece of music has had this kind of hold on me in 2013. - Emp

Open Mike Eagle - Password (tiny man raps): This song is OME at his greatest potential. Hide ya kids, hide ya wives! - Brando

Opski Chan - Wizardry: The Zae Town's wonderful wordsmith wipes away all that mess and let's you ride passenger to bear witness to his massacre. - Emp

Phosphorescent - Song For Zula: Come on. How would this song not get a top spot. It is THE one shining moment of musical perfection for 2013. Phosphorescent can go away and never make any more music because this is a peak that cannot be topped. – Del

Phox - Noble Heart: This song was written for me, and I dare anyone, even the adorable Fucks in the band, to negate that fucking fact. - Joel

Rare Monk - Mama Bear: That bassline is so hard, but not as hard as the guitars and fiddle. I could run into the sun shirtless while listening to Mama Bear. It makes my soul fill up with life bro. - Tim

Ricky Lewis - Clay Babies: I fall in love with life every time I hear this song. It wraps me up in between its milky terts while I weep my way to redemption. – Tim

Run The Jewels (Killer Mike & EL-P) - Sea Legs: Killer Mike conspicuously issues a fusillade of "Fuck You"'s to Rap's reigning elites without batting an eye. – Emp

Sister Crayon - Cynic: Pure beauty only accentuated by a drive through Joshua tree last spring. Good thing for Johnny Wu, because I can't believe I left it off my top albums. - Brando

Swim - Creeper: This is the greatest 80's throwback pop song of 2013 that no one is talking about. STILL. I can't let this continue. - Del

Typhoon - Dreams of Cannibalism: The sound of this song is as large in scope and scale as the band. It goes to 11 yo. – Del

The Uncluded - Delicate Cycle: This song is just so incredible. Life anthem for real. Keep your drawls clean. – Johnny

Washed Out - All I Know: That reeeeeedlllrererrrr noise at 1:20 is the best noise I've heard all year. Marijuana is excellent. - Joel

YC The Cynic - Molotovs at Poseidon: Probably the hardest shit that dropped this year. The world play is exquisite, the delivery and cascading flow is jaw dropping amazing and the simplicity of the statement makes it possibly the best rap song of the year. - Tim

Youth Lagoon - Dropla: With all of its swirling noises and feelz my love for this song will never die. - Del
