Scott Aukerman, who is best know for his catchphrase turned worldwide sensation -What's Up Hotdog, is also the host of the wildly successful podcast Comedy Bang Bang (Formerly Comedy Death Ray Radio) that features the funniest comedy minds every week. Based on the live show at the UCB Theater in Los Angeles, Comedy Bang Bang is steeped in improve tradition and includes such amazing characters as Ice T (Paul F. Tompkins), El Chupacabra and Bobby Bottle Service (Nick Kroll), Bob Ducca (Seth Morris), Jesse "The Body" Ventura, Gary Busey, Huell Howser (James Adomian) as well as a weekly guest host. Scott has also been a cast member on Mr. Show and directed many of the Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis episodes. Scott Aukerman has also just landed a gig as the host of the new 90 minute comedy block on IFC. Scott was kind enough to sit down with us discuss the important issues of the day.
SYFFAL: Comedy Bang Bang is spawned from the highly successful stage show Comedy Bang Bang, did you fear that there would be a new coke-esque backlash by changing up the formula from stage to radio?
Scott Aukerman: Some would call me an "innovator," going from stage to radio. And now with my new IFC TV show, I hope to continue that pioneering progression which no performer before me has blazed.
SYFFAL: Who is your favorite guest? Mine is Enigma Force 5 front man Jesse "The Body" Venture.....speaking of them, what did you think of their most recent album? I thought it had a bit too much fluff.
Scott: I guess I really like the Wacky Ding Dongs... I really sympathized with their plight, ya know? All they wanted was some pop parody prestige.
SYFFAL: What kind of problems do you encounter recording your shows in 2009? Do you think you will encounter the same troubles with the 2011 shows that you record in 2010 or have you worked out the kinks, like the time Ray Davies held the station hostage to get his new song played on the air.
Scott: You know, at this point, I've recorded them so long ago, I don't remember the problems we had in 2009. But the troubles we had in 2010, for the 2011 shows, were astronomical. You won't believe what happened this year - I can barely believe it. Bob Ducca is cured. Ice-T won an Oscar. And Whoopi Goldberg is dead. DEAD, I tell you!
SYFFAL: You have taken on the venture of Earwolf Radio complete with the Earwolf Radio iPhone app. Do you think there will ever be a time when Indians, will outsource their call centers to America? and how will Americans feel about having to answer call center questions about peace pipes and scalping?
Scott: This reminds me to remind all of our listeners - watch "Outsourced," this fall on NBC! Definitely the best upcoming show since "The Event!"
SYFFAL: Cyber Thug has taken over your show on a few different occasions, do you think we will ever see a Cyber thug podcast a la Sklarboro country? If so what is the cool name for his show? Im thinking Cyber Thugs not drugs as a cool play on the hugs not drugs campaign. (Ed. Note: The Cyber Thug Podcast launched almost immediately after I sent this question)
Scott: If only I had received this in time! Well, hopefully the title they came up with will suffice. But seriously, hope you enjoy that show! GET IT IN.
SYFFAL: Scott, on more than one occasion you have shown that you are a highly talented singer. When can we expect an album and will you be collaborating with Tim McGraw to cover the Fat Boys cover of Chubby Checkers "The Twist"?
Scott: Very interesting - I just downloaded the Fat Boys album this song is on. ARE YOU INSIDE MY INTERNET???
SYFFAL: Hacky Sac - for or against?
Scott: Depends on the sack.
SYFFAL: I love your catchphrase "what's up hot dog", being a noted catchphrase-ologist can you break us off with a fresh and unique catchphrase to help us market our shirt?
Scott: "Hi, T-Shirt!" (Ed. Note: "Hi T-Shirt" t-shirts coming soon)
SYFFAL: The world of podcast is a highly competitive and dangerous one, how does one navigate such a world, and do you have a guy like Quinn from Jaws manning your ship? (yes that is gay code)
Scott: He shows me his scars every day, and I, in turn, show him my butt-hole.
SYFFAL: Would you rather?
Scott: No, thank you.
