Falside - True Dreams: Episode One

Joel Frieders | April 12, 2016
I've decided I don't have enough time anymore. I can only dedicate so many hours to my hobbies these days, so I've decided to outsource my listening habits as well. Gone are the days when I could dig through piles and piles of potentially awesome music to find the gems that make me feel as cool as I used to feel when I could dig through piles and piles of potentially awesome music finding gems that make me feel cool.  I contacted one of my favorite faces on the internet, Falside, and set him on the path to his latest project "True Dreams", which he describes as compiling his new favorites, songs that influence him, and what he listens to on a daily basis. Little does the unknowing listening public know, but all of the tunes added to this half hour mix are handpicked with me in...

One Song: ANGELS & AIRWAVES - Overload

Joel Frieders | April 5, 2016
I haven't listened to a Tom DeLonge song on purpose in a decade or more. When I was in college a few of my roommates were Blink 182 diehards, but I sort of missed the boat because when I lived in California it wasn't cool to like Blink because other people outside of California now liked Blink and California has to be FIRST and the ONLY people to like something or it becomes stale. It goes from WOOOOO! to EWWWWW! faster than you can say "Isla Vista is about to crumble into the ocean bro". So I didn't hate on the music, I was just never around it and when I was around it I was drinking Natty Light and hearing about all the finger banging all of my disease riddled roommates were doing.  But my bro Moses sent over this link for Angels & Airwaves and I hit play because I trust him, even...

One Song: Astronauts. - You Can Turn It Off

Joel Frieders | April 4, 2016
I love how Astronauts. sound like ear pillows from the fucking get-go. It's like every song of theirs is meticulously crafted to be both soul warming and mood cooling, like it's the icy hot of ear insertables.  I've also been playing an air-xylophone at my desk since discovering this track this morning. Every time the phone stops ringing I start the fucker over and let the warm cool chilling heats of "You Can Turn It Off" cascade over my love handles and up and around my loins. Astronauts. is the soundtrack to my life as filmed on an 8mm camera and played back at half speed, and I've never wanted to hug an entire band more than I do right fucking now for creating such a comfortable place to disrobe and spin in circles. Don't look at me like that, just spin next to me bro.

Quick Fix: Yea Big & Kid Static - We May Actually Mean It

Joel Frieders | April 3, 2016
Is today just a regular Sunday bro? Sunday's are for bacon and waffles and hikes with the kids, right? NOT TODAY BROS.  Let me set the Sunday morning scene:  I just finished making Sunday breakfast for the family. I cleaned up Sunday hardcore. I took my ceremonial second Sunday movement, AND THEN THIS TEXT POPS UP IN MY SUNDAY FEED: After 7 long years in the wilderness, Chicago Duo Yea Big & Kid Static are back with a wonderful new album QUILT 2 You might not know what this means, but this means a fucking LOT. Yea Big & Kid Static set the stage a decade ago for the rest of us to accept that we're weird and it's better to dive into it and breathe it than to run from it and let it stay stuck to your foot like a piece of toilet paper. Yea Big & Kid Static took their...

World Premiere: Words Hurt - Chekhov's Gun

Joel Frieders | April 1, 2016
This is my best friend Tim. Tim is a rapper. If you don't understand because I didn't give him a rap nomdeplume, dude's rap name is Alaska. He's been one of my favorite rappers since before I met him, and after I met him I didn't even know he was the rapper I was already a huge fan of. It's kismet we're besties, not just because I can brag that he's what this song entails, but because he's SUPES HANDSOME. All cockrubbing aside, peep the new single from power pop duo Words Hurt, featuring rappering by Alaska and production by Lang Vo. Also, the B Side has some guesties in Marilyn Carino (LOVE HER, LOVE HER SHOW!) and Hemlock Ernst aka Sam Herring from Future Islands.  This is the lead single off the album Fuck That Pretty Boy Shit which drops on 4/26/16. And if you haven't pressed...

Favorite Albums - First Quarter - 2016

Staff | April 1, 2016
It's the end of a 3 month period. So, for us, that means that we share our favorite albums of the quarter. And the first quarter has been a blur this year. The only thing I remember is what Trump and Kanye did. The rest was just white noise....so it was hard, but we dug deep, swiped some sweat from our brows, took a swig of Gatorade, dug a little deeper and found 9 amazing albums for you to check out.  Per usual, Del fought with us to extend the number of entries to 25 albums, none of which he actually reviewed.....he's such a piece of shit.  Anyhoo, here they are. Enjoy.  Joel's Favorite Q1 Albums TW Walsh - Fruitless Research: This dude is the best friend he didn't know I was. His drums are dirty, his synths are shimmering, and his vocals remind me of an after school special where the...

Favorite Songs - First Quarter of 2016

Staff | March 31, 2016
The first part of 2016 is full of hatred, bigotry, and the deaths of a handful of hugely influential musicians. We all mourn in different ways.  Joel listens to electro, does hot yoga, and prances around pantsless. Tom chooses to waitress at a local diner, spinning plates and serving greasy hashbrowns to truckers. Del keeps starting to write reviews, but then he gets a new customer at the Sunglass Hut...a side job he has to pay off the debt on his Von Dutch hat collection. And Brando, well, Brando just keeps fucking up and not telling anyone how he fucked up, only that he fucked up and he won't do it again, but because we can't call him on his fuck ups, he'll do it again.  Peep SYFFAL's favorite tracks of the first quarter of 2016. Hit play on a playlist and go about your...

One Song: Pleasure House - Cyan

Joel Frieders | March 29, 2016
I DON'T KNOW WHO THIS IS BUT IT FEELS LIKE I KNOW EXACTLY WHO THIS IS AND I FUCKING LOVE IT. Pleasure House sound like a raunchy mix between Arctic Monkeys, Foals, and The 1975 if they had facial hair and didn't get beat up on the playground. I fucking love it. I've said I fucking love it twice already. Now thrice. I like how modern pop rock isn't shying away from vocals that are this fucking endearing. I also appreciate the guitar player just jerking off the wah in the background, which takes the "holy shit this might be super fucking produced, you can't even hear the fucking picking noise on the strings" feel and makes it a little less stuffy. It's almost like a throw rug with a piss stain on it. While it might seem out of place if you're only looking at the piss stain, it sort of ties...

SYFFALIST - March - 2016

Tom Doz | March 28, 2016
Andrew Bird - Left Handed Kisses (ft. Fiona Apple): A song about writing a love song and it's perfect.  Britta Phillips - Drive (Cars Cover): I have a theory. If you fuck up a cover of 'Drive' you need to hang up your wet long johns. It's one of the few songs that allows itself to be covered and 98.4% of the time will sound awesome.  Japanese Breakfast - In Heaven: If this sounds like a song Del would recommend it is  because he did. It's a perfect combo of dreaminess, 90's alt rock and corniness. Yet, I love it. P.S. This album comes out on Friday but you can stream it right now on Hype Machine.  Ray LaMontagne: Pat Two - In My Own Way: I've already given this song a worthy fellating in my review for Ray's album. All that I need to say right now is that 'In My Own Way' is the BEST song I...
