One Song: Damien Rice - I Don't Want To Change You

Tom Doz | October 8, 2014
8 years. That is how long it's been since Damien Rice has released an album. And I have a feeling that I'm probably the only one at SYFFAL who is down with Damien Rice because his songs are on the verge of being overly sappy, but I can't deny the feelz they bring to the interior of my pants. His fucking Irishy voice is so damn smooth and he is the master of introducing some stringz at those perfect moments....those moments when you already have goose bumps, but he makes them grow even more and you can feel your skin stretching to the max. ...that's what Damien Rice does. 'I Don't Want To Change You' is the first track off of his album My Favourite Faded Fantasy that will be out on 11-11 and is produced by Rick fucking Rubin. Does...

World Premiere: We Were Astronauts - Music City

Joel Frieders | September 2, 2014
I know nothing about WeWereAstronauts. Bro, I only know what I know bro, and what I know bro has nothing to do with WeWereAstronauts bro. Welp, I should mention that lately I've been waking up in the middle of the night with a need to look out the front winder and when I do get up to look out I've seen the same big black bird sitting on my car staring at the winder I'm staring out of. It's all very Crow bro. But I DO know that the first time I heard the new EXCLUSIVE SINGLE from WeWereAstronauts titled Music City was the LAST TIME I knew nothing about WeWereAstronauts bro. Music City starts out like an Alabama Shakes tap takeover, but once you burp a few times it starts to sound like the Kings of Leon....

One Song: DAMEHT - Girl Jeans

Joel Frieders | August 26, 2014
Whoever the Fuck DAMEHT are, they're fucking KILLING me with this Girl Jeans track. At first I thought I was listening to a smooshwich of The 1975 and The Neighborhood, but without the "the", ALLS I HEARS IS THE FRESHIES. Seriously, if you were in the market for a track to pop pop jiggle to, I just found it for you bro. The guitar action on this track feels like a direct shoutout to Michael Jackson's Beat It but in a reverence I can only compare to the first time I heard Rockwell's "Somebody's Watching Me" when I was a kid. It isn't that there's any copycat shit happening, but holy Fuck does this go down as smooth as the aforementioned jammies. DAMEHT have somehow combined the ting ting bling of synthy electro pop with a gentle brooding sense of...

Quick Fix: Rob Sonic Ft. Breeze Brewin - Not For Nothing

Joel Frieders | July 24, 2014
Rob Sonic confuses the balls off me. Because Roberto Sonic is poetically wriggleschmelting e'ethang the majority of the time, I have a hard time imagining this dude doing regular day to day tasks because of how insane this muthafucker manhandles the English language. It's like, how would you imagine Shakespeare wiping his ass? What would Shel Silverstein doing his taxes be like? And now... I can't help but ask the question: HOW WOULD ROB SONIC ORDER A BURRITO? Oh Rob Sonic (sigh), I love everything about him ('cept his personality, what a dick that guy is). So here be the new single "Not For Nothing", which features Breeze Brewin of the Juggaknots, over production by my BFF Edison, and if you've never...

One Song: Bahamas - All The Time

Tom Doz | July 10, 2014
In case you didn't know Afie Jurvanen is Bahamas and Bahamas is Afie. Coincedentally, that is the name of his new album that is coming out on 8-19. Wait. Wait. Back the Fuck up? Did I just say Bahamas is releasing a new album???? Holy shit. I did! This all came as a pleasent surprise to me when I came across Afie's new track 'All The Time' yesterday. While listening, a pleasent calm came over me and thoughts of his previously released album 'Barchords' came rushing back into my memories. I loved this album so hard back then; it was one of my favorites of 2011 and I can confidentally say 'All The Time' picks up where Barchords left off. This track is the condensation dripping off your cold glass of lemonade being drank on...

World Premiere: Duke Evers - Seaside

Joel Frieders | July 3, 2014
The first time I hit play on Seaside from Duke Evers, I assumed I was hearing yet another incarnation of some adorably/annoyingly folky Monsters & Men meets the Lumineers clones that have plagued our email inboxes since PR reps thought they were going to break the "next" M&M or Lumineeeez bro. While it isn't as constant as it was a few years ago, holy Fuck balls on a ball of Fuck that is holy, EVERY REP THOUGHT THEIR VERSION OF THE SAME DAMN THING WAS BETTER THAN EVERYONE ELSE'S VERSION OF THE SAME DAMN THING. Duke Evers might have fooled me into thinking I was hearing a band cling to that kitsch that isn't just starting to bother me, it's starting to fucking infuriate me, but dude? DUDE. AM I DRUNK OR IS THIS BALLS ASS AWESOME?!?!?!?!?!...

Quick Fix: Waterstrider - Redwood

Joel Frieders | February 3, 2014
I love right now. Some random band that doesn't suck balls just sent a link to a single titled Redwood, and it's unbelievable. Seriously, the way the drums welcomed me in with the galloping I was already hooked and I hadn't even heard the vocals yet. Imagine starting a track with Andrew Bird, with the aforementioned galloping rhythm, but then add his trademark pluckage and a guitar lick that makes one twiddle some invisible air strangs, and then what's this? KICK ASS VOCALS? Ah Fuckballs on a low mileage 96 Camry this song is fucking balls. I can almost picture myself taking credit for how amazing this song sounds right now. So here is your new favorite band, Waterstrider. I've gone ahead and circled and red arrowed you your favorite bandmember below. He is a longshoreman, worked the...

Pop Cultures Collide: Giant Gorilla Dog Thing & PJ Katz - Top That from the film Teen Witch

Tim Baker | December 5, 2012
We might have actually started this series with the hopes that someone would have the stones to cover the legendary Teen Witch Rap which has become the thing of internet legend and recently even to its very own feature on the Grantland Network's Rembert Explains. Most rappers were either too afraid, to serious, or to rappery (read: lazy) to get this fucker done. Thank god for the good folks at Pig Food Records. Giant Gorilla Dog Thing aka GGDT which consists of rappers Dez and Dood Computer linked up with super producer and cabbie hat champion of the world PJ Katz to tackle this monster, pin it down, and stuff it so we could display it proudly in the SYFFALSTUDY. America and the world have these sensual bags of meat sauce to thank for such an inspiring feat. I love you pricks. Tim GGDT (...

Killer Mike - Don't Die (Produced by EL-P)

Brent Hoffman | April 18, 2012
Don't Die is the third sampling off R.A.P. Music we've heard since Killer Mike and EL-P announced the release of their collaborative effort some months ago. Since then, there's been a lot of "what an odd pairing!" type-shit and "oh this reminds me of..." going on. I guess everyone who has made a single statement about this album in any respect has probably been right so far. Odd pairing? I guess. Musical marriage made in heaven? Undeniably, so don't question it. I'm lucky to be old enough to remember thinking "Ice Cube with Keith and Hank Shocklee, whaaaat the Fuck?!?" There was something about it that didn't seem natural, but the end result was a fucking masterpiece of an album that made perfect sense. I think it's safe to say that EL...

Pop Cultures Collide: The Coasts - The Phony King of England (From the Disney Classic, Robin Hood)

Tom Doz | April 3, 2012
The Coasts are cuties, yet, they have such a gritty and dirty sound. This is why it does not surprise me that these lovable pricks would choose to rock the nutz off a Disney song. When lead singer, Ike Peters, told me that he’d be covering a song from Robin Hood, I honestly didn't know what to expect, but I knew it’d somehow be awesome. The Coasts lived up the hype I built up in my head and surpassed it ten fold. This cover of The Phony King of England is morphed into a Kink-y sounding 60’s garage rock anthem that will make you want to kick your foot through a guitar amp. A word from The Coast’s Ike Peter’s Robin Hood is my number one favorite Disney movie. And if it's not in your top 5, then you need to watch it again. And other than every word...
