Busdriver- MUCH

Brandon Backhaus | November 18, 2015
I've loved Busdriver's music for at least a decade now. Probably longer. From the dreadlocked man of two microphones spinning syllabic backslaps and neck cracks. To the statesman for all the rap your girlfriend hates. And I still somehow don't ever know 100% what to say about him without picturing him rolling his eyes hard should he read what I wrote. But here goes:  Busdriver has evolved. Become somehow more than he's ever been. He feels like the glue to me. He's somehow secretly the key to holding everything that is good about the craft of rap music together. Busdriver is a large chunk of the derivative soul of Los Angeles rap music. Not just a chunk of the soul. That makes his significance seems waning.  I mean to express that sentiment's opposite. Busdriver's significance grows....

Ceschi- This Won't Last Forever

Brandon Backhaus | November 17, 2015
At this point, if you have been reading Syffal for any amount of time, you've figured out how chubbed up we STAY for anything new from brother Ceschi Ramos. Like how we've turned down advertisers wanting to sell y'all new snazzy sneaks in favor of a sleek, mostly ad-free experience centered on taint jokes and Tom's chin, Ceschi is a DIY god-person-man-homie and proprietor of the independent as fuck, Fake Four, Inc.  If you have no idea what I'm talking about, welcome to Syffal. Take off your compression undershirt and stay awhile.   "This Won't Last Forever" is from Ceschi's latest record Broken Bone Ballads. That record, Ceschi's first since The One Man Band Broke Up, and is produced to perfection by Canadian beat beast and Dapper Dan spokesmodel, Factor Chandelier. ...

Cavanaugh (Open Mike Eagle x Serengeti)- Screen Play

Brandon Backhaus | November 16, 2015
Deltron 3030 is still one of my favorite rap records. It is the Mount Everest of concept records, immersing the listener in post-apocalyptic wasteland of battle-rapping aliens, gas-jacking masked monks and our syllabic protagonist, the tenderly braggadocios, Deltron. It is a certified masterpiece from Dan the Automator and Del the Funkee Homosapien.  Collectively known as Cavanaugh, Open Mike Eagle and concept-record-veteran Serengeti, have zipped up some blue maintenance jumpsuits and started punching a virtual clock as laborers at the fictional Cavanaugh housing development. As off-center alt rappers from Chicago, the two have long been linked, and are, from what I understand, friends. This is their first collaboration and from what I can tell they are going all fucking in.  Their first...

Bones & Beeker- Heartbroken in Love

Joel Frieders | November 13, 2015
The schwanz Bones & Beaker swangs is mighty.  Mighty fucking fownky.  The first time I heard "Heartbroken In Love" I instantly performed a step dancing routine one could only refer to as suburban sensual. It was like all of the things that made my wife think I was a sexual beast when I first hypnotized her with my sexuals, but instead of being cool, this time it was sexy, it was crazy, AND it was cool. It was fucking crazysexycool bros. I was a human TLC album guys. Bones & Beaker make a motherfucker wanna perform for his wife and make her fall in love with my clumsy ass all over again, just because of how fucking smooth and fownky the shit be.  When a song starts as swiftly sex-thumpy as this, you have no other choice but to remain in character as the sexy person you are...

Come Wind- Clarity

Joel Frieders | November 10, 2015
Who the fuck are Come Wind? And is Come Wind a fancy way of mentioning that you are the source of a foul odor? Or is it more of a way of asking someone to create an odor and direct it towards you? Is this a fetish band? Who cares. I think I love this fucking band.  Jesus balls on a Dishwalla cover band's freshly laundered collection of ascots, this is fucking dope. This dude's jaw doesn't just open up and down, it slides side to side and shit, and he sounds like a Ben Gibbard you WOULDN'T want to punch if he still hadn't made up his mind after fifteen minutes waiting in line at the coffee shop. FUCK YOU GIBBARD, I WILL NOT FORGET TULSA 2004! (I'm lying, I don't drink coffee I didn't cold brew myself on my antique cold brewing mechanism. I'm lying about that too. I wouldn't go back to...

Lamon Manuel and Analog(ue) Tape Dispenser- Sh*t. Everything We Have Together is Falling Apart.

Brandon Backhaus | November 9, 2015
Tasty, tasty new video from Lamon Manuel of Tomorrow Kings and Analog(ue) Tape Dispenser. This song goes so hard. It's the kind of stream of consciousness clouded commentary splayed open like a biology class cat all sinews stretched and shaved that I can't get enough of because its how my own brain strings together the copious amounts of thinkings that swell to blissful at the interconnectedness of their flow with melted cheese on top.  Consider me hot on the trail for the rest of this record. Kinda rap that make the rest of y'all look stupid because you're doing it wrong.

Red Nova- Free Yourself

Joel Frieders | November 2, 2015
Muse and My Chemical Romance. Holy fuck these guys sound like Muse and My Chemical Romance. I fucking love Muse and My Chemical Romance. Red Nova might have put together one of the most visually thematic and enjoyable music videos I've ever fucking seen with the accompanying visuals for "Free Yourself". Holy shit am I enjoying the absolute shit out of this. Sure I love watching beautiful women perform a glistening interpretive dance, but if the song sucked I probably wouldn't have sat ang stared for as long as I did.  Whoever the fuck Red Nova are, they have their shit together and I'm seriously fucking considering purchasing a pair of red jeans.

Daniel Lugn- carbon pusher

Joel Frieders | October 30, 2015
Holy fuck. Daniel Lugn, whoever the fuck you are, you have me by the balllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllls with this shit.  I love how this shit sounds like a cross between Stateless and a Maynard James Keenan b side, but somehow it's its own beast entirely. Whenever there's a rhythm I can nod to, no matter the actual tempo, you have a better chance of getting me topless with your shit. This had me topless almost instantly. This is fucking beautiful. The video for "carbon pusher" would've scared me had I not been so hypnotized with the song the second it started. But I like being scared, especially when the song is the only woobie I'd need to get through the video.  NOW, WHO THE FUCK IS DANIEL LUGN?

Emancipator- Ocelot

Brandon Backhaus | October 29, 2015
Everything about Emancipator keeps getting better. His breaks are sharper, his friends musician-ier, his sample sound less like samples probably because his friends are musician-ier. There's a live element to Emancipator's instrumentation that make you feel like you are listening to his music while inside some kind of biodome of dope.  Like the walls reverberate with the wavelengths of the divine. LIke the ferns and birds all twitch and chirp in rhythm. Like the air gets heavy only to blow freshly upon your sweating body when another swell in the song soars. Like the very fabric of its construction is rooted in the emotive electronic emissions of Emancipator himself.  "Ocelot" is a video love baby to those old and stoney Mind's Eye videos mixed with a session of Minecraft. I love the...
