Oskar Schuster- Damascus

Joel Frieders | September 10, 2015
Whoever the hell Oskar Schuster is, I'm creeped the fuck out, my wallpaper is moving, and I'm relaxed as fuck. Peep this video for "Damascus", then ask yourself, "what the hell am I watching?" and then read Oskar's description of the video below: "I created it using around 1200 self-developed negatives. All motions were executed very slowly and shot with around 2 frames per second, the fastest my fingers could do with an old analog SLR camera. All in all I shot 40 rolls of film (~1440 single photos) which I then developed using just coffee and washing soda (an alternative to chemical developer). I then scanned everything and arranged the single frames into short scenes. The track, "Damascus", is taken from my new album "Tristesse Télescopique" which has just been...

Gregory Pepper & His Problems- Come By It Honestly

Brandon Backhaus | September 9, 2015
There nothing I can say that Gregory Pepper can't say better. I rarely use the word genius. But Gregory Pepper's particular brand of bite has provided sheer genius moments in music the last few criminally slept on years. I LOVED his collaboration with Ceschi Ramos as Common Grackle. I thought it brimmed with everything music needs to be real. Pepper's video for "At the Grindcore Show" makes, what was already a song so dark it was hilarious, into acoustic guerrilla comedy. He's one of the most prolific writers in music if only for his willingness to fucking tell it to you. He's so open and it cuts deep, sometimes too deep for people, sometimes too deep for me, sometimes too deep for himself,  probably. I mean listen to him.  His band Gregory Pepper and His Problems JUST JUST JUST put out a...

Henry Canyons- C'est La Vie

Brandon Backhaus | September 7, 2015
Some people are just cool. Like no matter what they wear. No matter how they act. No matter who they kick it with. No matter where they are. No matter what language they speak. No matter. Just cool.  Henry Canyons is one cool human being in addition to being one of the most lyrically gifted emcees doing the whole lyrically gifted emcee thing. "C'est La Vie" is off of Henry Canyons' new record titled, Canyonland. And with cosigns from Billy Woods and features from Open Mike Eagle, Canyons isn't poised in the starting block. Dude isn't even bothered with the racetrack anymore. He's been constructing this whole other shit that's already way beyond what your whole shit can ever be.

Overhead, The Albatross- Big River Man

Joel Frieders | September 4, 2015
Overhead, The Albatross bro.  Normally I would be singing that and I'd have my arms out like a scarecrow and I'd continue with "hangs motionless upon the air" because I really, truly, loved the marijuana in me youth bro.  But this band? HOLY SHIT! THEY HAVE BUCKETS AND LADDERS!! THIS IS SO BALLLLLSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!! Normally, I prefer my post rock with a sense of dread ontop of the underlying beauty of suspicion while coated in patience and layered in pleasure, but BRO! THAT IS THE NAME OF THIS BAND'S NEXT ALBUM! Overhead, The Albatross will be releasing "dread ontop of the underlying beauty of suspicion while coated in patience and layered in pleasure" next spring! OMG! WE CAN CALL IT BY ITS ACRONYM DOOTUBOSWCIPALIP! I'm drunk. Sorry. No, but if you've ever wondered if it was possible to...

Ancient Astronauts & Asphate- SUFFOC-HATE

Joel Frieders | September 3, 2015
"__________'s life was taken too quickly." I don't have much to say beyond I have no idea what to fix, what to fix first, or how to help beyond standing up when being told to sit the fuck down and yelling into my kids' faces that they are no more important than anyone else. Life is just important. Asphate and Ancient Astronauts, thank you.  For the rest of us, let's fucking do better.  GO DOWNLOAD THIS FOR FREE AND SHARE THE SHIT OUT OF IT.

Black Violin- Stereotypes

Joel Frieders | September 2, 2015
Holy shit. Talk about goosebumps.  There's nothing I love more than surprising someone by stomping on a previously held stereotype and simultaneously ruining and making someone's day. I've experienced my fair share of stereotypes as a tattooed white male in cheap clothing, but it ain't shit compared to my friends of color in their day to day. It's infuriating to witness stereotypes against others, but holy shit is it inspiring to see something like this where there is no exception to the level of talent and commitment these guys on the violins are sharing with us. Not only is the police siren squak perfectly executed, it's necessary. At a time in history where there's never been such a thick line drawn in the sand between those who police and those policed, I think this video and what it...

Miracles of Modern Science- Lean On (Major Lazer Cover)

Joel Frieders | September 1, 2015
A few years ago me and Tom were covering a show at the Hideout in Chicago for a band called Saint Motel. The opening act was Miracles of Modern Science and Tom and I both agreed they were fucking awesome. They brought a classically original and stringed approach to pop shits, but they didn't seem hoity toity or snobbish or full of themselves. Their attitude was apparent in their performance, they were fucking geeky fucking cool, but had the confidence of high school quarterbacks, the lot of them. Thankfully we left that show loving MoMS because Saint Motel turned out to be everything we hate about modern music (intentionally geek chic, orchestrated emotional expressions, soulless songs, and a fucking wardrobe we wanted to set on fire) while MoMS have turned into a familiar and appreciated...

Trevor James Tillery- Out Of Time

| August 31, 2015
Trevor James Tillery bro, I fucking hate your hat. Your hat is one of the main reasons I can't be a performing musician anymore. That fucking hat represents every asshole in every band I HATED opening up for or headlining after. The guys that wore that hat were the guys who would sit in the green room (outside the walk in cooler of the pizza joint bro, cmon, let's not lie about our past gigs bro) with their girlfriend of the moment and just mope. They weren't actually sad or depressed or anything, it was just easier to convey this sort of "I'm an intellectual emotional musician bro" vibe by not being out with the people trying to forget why life can suck. Hell, back when I was a gigging musician, we didn't have cell phones man. There was no facebooking to pass the time. We had to TALK TO...

Benn Grim- Eat My Shit

Joel Frieders | August 28, 2015
I fucking love this dude. I spent the better part of Wednesday listening to a 15 second snippet on repeat on my cell phone since I couldn't find this song in full. Benn Grim sounds like the way I rap when I imagine I'm a rapper in my head where I rap bros. This shit is like my dream journal, but rapped by a rapper who can rap all hell yea.  I wish I was this dope. BUT HOLY BALLS "Eat My Shit" just feels fucking awesome. It's like the shit I used to listen to at 5pm every Friday, like, before I had kids and could actually start a weekend, or even have a weekend for that matter. I LOVE this shit. It's rude, it's head nodding, it's crass, it's fucking warehouse sexy and shit. Huge high fives to Benn Grim, Pigfood Records and my man easyily over 80 with the 40 in the street rockin'...

Angels Dust- Funeral

Brandon Backhaus | August 27, 2015
I don't know a goddamned thing about Angels Dust. I'm even tempted to suggest a possessive apostrophe there at the end of Angels. But I'm going to refrain.  My exes would all be so proud.  All I do know is that this Angels Dust video came to me care of one wonderful wavey wierdo, Walter Gross. You are in danger you are so on point here, Mr. Gross. What I do know is: THIS SONG IS THE FUCKING SOUNTRACK TO THE LAST TWO WEEKS OF HIDING I'VE BEEN DOING!  It all gets to be too much. It all needs to be ignored behind drawn shades and headphones. It all sounds like "Funeral". "The days go by so slowly. But our life, it passes so fast."  That's it, I'm drawing the covers underer my chin tonight. I get like this in transition. And I always gravitate toward songs like this one.  It's a plodding...
