field medic- xplodineyez

Joel Frieders | September 25, 2015
I love how field medic forces me to slow the fuck down. The track "xplodineyes" feels like a blend of Frank McGinnis and Walter Gross. It's lofi DIY sure, but it's got bigger balls than most of the overproduced folk shit some assholes consider "pure".  Someone tell field medic I love him, but then make sure and wash your hands because he looms his own ankle length overcoats bros. There be a lot of chemicals in them dyes bro.

MAKO- World Set Alight

Joel Frieders | September 24, 2015
I hit play and got back to reading my shit for a meeting and I had to click back to make sure I had the right video. This MAKO shit sounds like a cross between My Chemical Romance and a faster tempo'd A Perfect Circle. At least it does on first listen. I'll have to listen to this on repeat to finger out if I'm actually loving it or just lusting after FINALLY OPENING A MUSIC SUBMISSION WITH AWESOME VOCALS. OKAY FINE I LOVE THE HELL OUT OF THIS.  "World Set Alight" is a bit young sounding for my normal tastes, but I'm still young enough to look disinterested and sketch the name MAKO on my trapper keeper bros. UGH. I HATE HIGH SCHOOL. Here's hoping I stay a smedium forever bros.

World Premiere: k the i- I Sit All By Myself

Joel Frieders | September 23, 2015
My friend k-the-i??? has always impressed me. On one hand, his beats are always some of the most forward-thinking creations I've ever heard at the time I first hear them. On the other hand, he's probably one of the nicest people I've ever met and I can tell after meeting hundreds of musicians and producers that he's genuine as fuck. When he mentioned he was looking to premiere a video I didn't even ask to hear it first. Sure it'll be weird. Sure it'll be different. But it's 100% Kiki and you'll never hear anything else like it... UNTIL EVERYONE ELSE HEARS IT AND APPROPRIATES IT FOR THEIR OWN SOUND. Trendsetter is a fucking understatement. Kiki is a soundsetter. A stylesetter. Kiki is a fucking friendsetter, as I wish all of my friends were this passionately involved in making their own...

Beat Connection- Illusion

Joel Frieders | September 22, 2015
I don't think I know who Beat Connection is.  I also don't think I've heard a song this wide open for freestyling before. I'm not talking the raps bro, I mean, I've been freestyle throat-humming a bass line that would MURDER. And I just flipped myself over a garbage can. Beautifully fucking shot, the video for "Illusion" is just as crisp as the track. As much as I appreciate the slow motion moves, I'm convinced this dude is fucking facemelting at regular speed. (*googles videos from Brixx the featured dancer in this here videa, finds a live performance over a track from Imogen Heap, starts to flutter hands like a fanboy*) I needed a slow motion dance tho, thanks bros.

Bonnie & The Bang Bang- Every New Love

Joel Frieders | September 22, 2015
I didn't think that guys who look like this would sound this fucking awesomely gentle.  This is like a fresh out of college Foals meets a peppier Band of Horses, but without pretentiousness and the overwhelming sense of plaid. I'd like to think Bonnie & the Bang Bang have their shit together, not just because they sound fucking great, but because a slide played on a 12 string electric is not the definition of consistent outside of the studio. That's balls bruh. I've listened to this song a good dozen times and I'm praying on my stack of pogs that this isn't the only song from B&TBB that tickles my pickle, because I fucking love it.

World Premiere: Walter Gross- Fade to Facts

Brandon Backhaus | September 21, 2015
WORLD PREMIERE:  Popular music these days is so pleasant.  I tend to fall into one of two lines of thinking as to why. There are the baser aspects of my soul that lean towards music's pleasantness being sprayed down from the heavens like some form of chemical pacifier. The government's auditory chemtrails. Then there are more rational reasons: people like shit to be pleasant, enjoy predictability, being coddled, held, told everything is going to be alright.  I am not one of those people.  I don't like to feel pleasant. It makes me nervous, suspicious, fretful like the other shoe hovers above just waiting for an excuse to rain misfortune down like acid. This isn't normal. I'm sure of that. But I'm not alone.  Walter Gross, living in Berlin, Germany is with me. Based on the soupy effected...

James Supercave- The Right Thing

Joel Frieders | September 16, 2015
James Supercave is like my altar ego. Not "alter ego" bro. ALTAR, bro. Meaning, he does the things I would only do in my altar boy get up.  These things include, but are not limited to:  having a woman write my name on her upper thigh having a tshirt come to life digitally head bang in a raincoat wear green screen outfits that show off my manbugles If this cinematic masterpiece doesn't float your boat, take two of these *points to balls* and call me in the morning.  JAMES SUPERCAVE YOU ARE MY SUPERFAVE! AND HERE ARE SOME TOUR DATES TO PLACES I WILL NEVER BE AT THE EXACT TIME THEY GET SUPERCAVED, because I am a father, a husband, a pharmacy operator, and a beekeeper, and I really really hate that I have social anxiety now.  9/20: Sacramento, CA @ TBD Festival9/26: Los Angeles, CA @ Non...

Sophomore- Outcry

Joel Frieders | September 15, 2015
This dude's beats just fucking creep up inside of me. I can almost predict where dude is going to put the dict I pre'd, but holy fucking chill balls against my warm damp forehead this shit is relaxing as fuck. Sophomore's tracks somehow have a therapeutic approach to them, as I've been using dude's music as a sort of wall in me brain that stops me-self from thinking thoughts I don't need to be thinking. "Outcry" is like the hands on method of keeping my hands off my brain training when I'm away from the place where certain thoughts should be thought. If I'm confusing you, it's because I turned the brain off after about 15 seconds of hearing this song for the first time. I expect this guy to become my favorite introspective electronic beat flinger in the very near future, and if I...

Shiko Shiko- Akira & Virgile

Joel Frieders | September 14, 2015
HOLY GOD IN SEVENTH HEAVEN (the cover band from outside chicago, not the show on the WB with the child molesting priest)!  MY FEELS ARE SPARKLING AND CARBONATED AND A STRANGE HUE OF PLUM!!!!! Shiko Shiko sound fucking amaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing! They're like Battles without falling asleep or Blood Brothers without the screaming, BUT THE SCREAMING MAKES THIS UNREAL! I can feel every fucking nerve ending in my body and I'm pushing things off my desk like I didn't just make all these piles neat as fuck bro. WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING!??!?! WHY DO I WANT NOTHING TO DO WITH THESE CLOTHES AND EVERYTHING TO DO WITH THOSE BRAND NEW DISHWASHING GLOVES AND THAT BUCKET OF COCONUT OIL!>?!?!?!?!? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! The Growlers- Chinese Fountain

Brandon Backhaus | September 13, 2015
Weirdly nostalgic and forward-thinking pretty boys holding hands in the present.  The Growlers are a band I FUCKING LOVE but am too old to properly support. The one time I went to Beach Goth (Beach Goth is the Growlers' namesake style, and the name of their rave/concert/carnival thingie.), I stepped on a kid sitting in the middle of a walkway snorting drugs and for the first time in my life I didn't think, join him. I actually thought, you stupid little fucksquash, go sit and do your drugs off to the side where PEOPLE AREN'T TRYING TO WALK.  If that ain't some old man shit, I don't know what is.  I ended up giving my backstage passes to another kid I ran into that I taught 4th grade. Best teacher ever. And then I went home.
